European C&I Energy Storage Demand
2026-07-30

Europe’s battery market is expanding fast — but the C&I storage segment may only be entering its next growth phase.
According to SolarPower Europe’s European Battery Market Outlook 2026–2030, Europe installed 36 GWh of new battery storage in 2025, taking total operational capacity above 100 GWh. While utility-scale projects now lead the market, commercial and industrial storage is also expected to accelerate: nearly 6 GWh of new C&I storage could be added in 2026, representing around 26% year-on-year growth.
What is driving that demand?
First, electricity price volatility is becoming increasingly relevant for commercial users. ACER reported that higher solar penetration in 2025 deepened Europe’s “duck curve,” creating more low or negative-price periods around midday and sharper evening price peaks. For businesses, this strengthens the case for shifting energy consumption across the day with storage.
Second, the combination of on-site solar + battery storage is becoming more important. Instead of immediately exporting surplus solar generation, businesses can store part of that energy for later use, increasing self-consumption and potentially reducing exposure to expensive peak periods.
Third, energy resilience remains a practical business consideration. For factories, warehouses, commercial buildings, data-intensive operations and remote facilities, storage can form part of a broader backup-power strategy and help businesses manage periods of grid constraint or instability.
However, the C&I opportunity is not simply about installing more batteries.
Project economics depend heavily on local electricity tariffs, load profiles, grid rules, available incentives, system sizing and the number of functions the battery can perform.
For EPCs, distributors and project developers, this means demand is increasingly about complete system integration:
Battery + PCS + EMS + thermal management + protection + PV/grid integration.
At CONCENPOWER, we see this as an important direction for European C&I projects. Our portfolio covers air-cooled PCS, liquid-cooled PCS and containerized energy storage solutions, supporting different project scales and application requirements.
The key question for the market is therefore becoming less about:
“Do businesses need energy storage?”
and more about:
“Which storage configuration creates the right value for this specific site?”
For partners working in Europe, which demand are you seeing most often — peak shaving, solar self-consumption, backup power, or grid-service applications?
